Here is what you can expect during some of these treatments.
Cleanings and exams
We recommend your child visit the dentist every six months beginning when their first tooth erupts, or by their first birthday, whichever comes first.
These visits will include a comprehensive examination of your child’s mouth, tongue, airway, and teeth to check for cavities and any other potential oral health problems. Our dental hygienist will clean and polish your child’s teeth while also teaching proper flossing technique and answering any questions you or your child has about dental hygiene or at-home preventive care.
We will also take occasional digital X-rays to monitor the growth of your child’s teeth and mouth and for detection of cavities or abnormalities that are otherwise unseen by a visual exam.
Made of non-toxic resin, a sealant is a coating that is applied to the chewing surface of the back teeth. When applied, sealants are permanently bonded, forming a barrier to protect teeth against plaque that causes tooth decay.
Sealants are recommended especially for children’s molars and bicuspids, which are the most common trouble areas for children, and are the hardest to keep clean. We typically apply sealants only to permanent (adult) teeth in children.
Fluoride has been a staple of preventive care treatments. This naturally occurring mineral interacts with the calcium and minerals that exist in saliva to protect against tooth decay while also hardening small imperfections on the surfaces of teeth. We recommend using fluoridated toothpaste and mouthwash at home; just look for any brand that has the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of acceptance.
We also offer in-office fluoride treatments, which can be administered during your regular visits to our office. In some cases, we may recommend the use of a home fluoride tray for children who are at a particularly high risk of developing cavities.
